CHOOSING WELL

Sometimes the honest recommendation is: build it yourself

A professional website is not automatically the sensible first purchase for every new business.

Modern website builders are capable tools. If the offer is simple, money is tight and you have time to learn, doing it yourself can be a perfectly sensible way to begin.

The trade is mostly time and judgement. A builder gives you the parts; it does not decide what customers need to hear, what can be left out or where uncertainty is getting in the way. Some owners enjoy making those decisions. Others lose weeks to them.

Professional help becomes valuable when the website needs to carry more responsibility, when your time is better spent elsewhere, or when you are too close to the business to see what a new customer sees.

Neither route proves how serious your business is. Start with what is proportionate, keep ownership clear and improve the website when there is a business reason—not because somebody has made you feel behind.

Good decisions usually begin with a clearer question.
